help index / accepting credit cards
This can be confusing even if you are experienced in business
as there seem to be so many options.
The best start is to contact your bank in the first instance,
explain what you want to do, then look at other options after
this.
Ideally you will need a 'Merchant Account', this is the basic
starting point for accepting credit card payments manually.
Some businesses may not be able to set up a Merchant Account
for some reason or they made need to process the transaction
in 'real time' in which case they will need to use one of
the many online payment processing companies. We cannot make
recommendations here for obvious reasons but below you will
find links to some of the biggest players in the market.
Probably two of the the biggest are www.worldpay.com
(follow the link to World Direct) and www.cybercash.com.
Take a look through their web sites to gain a grounding on
the systems and costs involved.
Barclays has some useful info at www.barclaysmerchantservices.co.uk
including info on ePDQ. More information can be found at www.securetrading.com
and a list of bank contact details can be found at http://www.securetrading.com/strategicpartners.htm.
If you are searching on the Internet for more info and are
based in the UK we recommend using a UK search engine such
as www.google.co.uk
or www.uk.altavista.com
These are good at retrieving results from UK based companies.
Use search terms such as ‘online payment processing’ and 'merchant
accounts’. Place your search term in inverted commas to cut
down extraneous results.
If your company is based in the US you have more options,
indeed, UK companies can and do use companies based outside
the UK, or without a UK division but for obvious reasons this
could cause some problems with communication in the long term.
If you still cannot find an answer to your query using the
above please contact us for
further help, assistance and guidance.
